Trailer Training

Trailer Training - Pass Drive

What is Trailer Training?

Car and Trailer Training, sometimes known as B+E Training, is designed to help you develop skills in towing a trailer with your vehicle. Through developing these skills, you will become proficient in the use of trailers. This will allow you to tow longer and heavier loads. You will learn how to manoeuvre, safely couple and uncouple the trailer, and drive on everyday roads. Following the training, you will sit the Car and Trailer Driving Test. On passing this, you will be allowed to tow heavier loads for business or leisure.

What Are The Benefits Of Trailer Training?

Our Car and Trailer Training courses are designed to help you master the roads with longer and heavier loads. Whether you are towing a trailer for work or leisure, you must have the correct licence. We deliver training to both individuals and businesses for recreational and commercial purposes. Through completing our training course and passing the Car and Trailer Driving Test, you will be able to tow larger loads.

Do I Need To Do A Trailer Training Course?

Whether or not you need to do a trailer course will depend on when you passed your Driving Test.

Licences issued from 1st January 1997

If you passed your car driving test on or after January 1997, you can:

  • Drive a car or van up to 3,500kg towing a trailer of up to 750kg.
  • Tow a trailer of over 750kg, as long as the combined maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

If you want to tow anything heavier, you’ll need to pass the car and trailer driving test.

Licences issued before 1st January 1997

If you passed your test before the 1st of January 1997, you’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM.

However, we recommend that you check your driving licence information online to see if you’re allowed to tow.

It is also recommended that you do not tow any more than 85% of the weight of your car. You can normally find the maximum towing weight for your vehicle in the vehicle’s manual.

The B+E Trailer Training Course

If you are required to do Trailer Training and pass the Car and Trailer Driving Test, our experienced DVSA approved driving instructors are here to help. Our instructors will go through thorough vehicle safety checks with you as part of the B+E course, before moving on to the various aspects of the Trailer Training Course ahead of your upcoming test. The B+E Training course will include: Learning set reversing manoeuvres, being shown how to safely uncouple and re-couple the trailer, and of course, how to drive safely on everyday roads with your trailer.

The Car and Trailer Driving Test

Once you have completed our training course you will sit your test at the nearest DVSA Test Centre. To pass the B+E test, you must be able to:

  • Drive safely and responsibly in different road and traffic conditions.
  • Show that you know The Highway Code by the way that you drive.

Once you have passed your B+E test, you will have a new category on your driving licence allowing you to tow heavier trailers and loads. You will now be able to tow a host of new trailers and loads for both commercial and leisure purposes.

Here at Pass Drive, we deliver professional car and trailer training to help you confidently master the roads with longer and heavier loads. Whether you’re towing a trailer for work or leisure, you must ensure that you have the correct licence. Unsure if your licence is valid for the category of vehicle you wish to drive? Don’t worry we’re here to help.
